"Gibraltar Cottage" depicted in the photograph above, probably dates from the late seventeenth century, and is therefore one of the oldest cottages on ' The Rock' the area now known as 'Old Barmouth'

In the book by Rev. J Evans, "A Tour Through Part of North Wales in 1798" this steeply sloping site is 'said to resemble the town of Gibraltar’

Much of the quaint eighteenth century character still survives in 'Old Barmouth', and is well worth the climb particularly with the added bonus of the view across Barmouth Bay or out over the Irish Sea or even visiting the first ever National Trust beauty spot of
Dinas Oleu (fortress of light). Follow the link for a
sunset from Dinas Oleu and more about its National Trust heritage.
